Are You Pricing Yourself Out Of The Market?

    Monday December 22, 2008

When negotiating wages with potential employers, have you priced yourself out of the market? While you certainly shouldn't underestimate your value, you should be sure to keep in mind the company you are looking at when negotiating wages. Asking for the highest wages available for your position and thinking those are fair for any business to pay is not reasonable. A small business with fewer clients is likely to require less of you than a very large business, and will thus also probably only be able to offer industry average wages. If you don't want to work somewhere small, then denying a low paying offer is fine, but if you have specifically aimed for small businesses, be prepared to take a hit to your wages.
