Getting The Best Wages

Friday December 5, 2008

Wages will generally only improve ever so slightly over time, so you will need to work at negotiating to make sure you get the best wages. Some people get quite nervous about asking for better wages, but there's no need to feel bad about it if you truly deserve more money.

There are two main elements to ensuring you get better wages - timing it right and proving the reason you deserve more pay. Choosing the wrong time and providing no reason for a pay rise will often just lead to disappointment and may reduce your ability to improve your wages in the future.

First of all, timing is very important. While there can be justifiable reasons for asking for a raise in your wages when the business you work for is in a downturn, it is unlikely to be appreciated. Wait for an opportunity when the business is doing well, especially if you have helped it come out of a difficult time.

Secondly, make sure you have reasons for why you deserve increased wages. The more obvious it is that you are a valuable asset to the organisation, the easier it is for your employer to justify paying you more. You certainly do not want to be met with the question "How do you improve our organisation's profitability?" without a well-thought response.
