    Researching Your Wages

    Tuesday January 20, 2009

When researching wages for your job, consider the current economic climate, the industry and its trends (is it booming or contracting?), unemployment within the sector, what level of education is required for the jobs you are after and what is the profitability of the company you either work for or are hoping to be employed by.

It is important to know yourself as an employee and what you can offer a company in order to truly determine your jobs wages worth. What are your strengths, weaknesses and competition within the industry, do you have high quality training that others in your field do not have?

Familiarize yourself with the details of the employer and their wages capacity. If it is a small company, you may need to adjust your wages expectations, but you must also consider how urgently the position needs to be filled along with how many other people would be pursuing this job.

Lastly, determine the company status in terms of development. Is it a mature company or just starting out? Also consider the established pay scales and organizational structure.

These factors should be considered when determining your value to a company and therefore, your appropriate wages.
