Earning More than Minimum Wage
Wednesday January 28, 2009
Statistics in the United States indicated that most minimum wage earners are young, work in food service and had not attended university. However, this does not accurately reflect Australian minimum wage demographic.
Firstly, in order to get ahead financially you must spend less than you earn. On a minimum wage this can be difficult, even after you have cut all unnecessary costs, leaving the option of increasing your income.
Employees can achieve this through several methods. By working two jobs in the short term this allows people to create a strong financial base. However, this isn't advisable for too long as working two different jobs for two different employers can eat into your wages through tax while also depriving you of leisure time.
Proactive employees may try seeking a promotion at their current minimum wage employment either through a promotion to management or into another department. Watch for advancement opportunities with your current employer. By making yourself the ideal employee into your minimum wage position, you open yourself up to higher responsibility positions and, therefore, higher wages.
A change in companies or professions is an alternative but this should be done with caution by making sure you have new jobs already secured before leaving your present employment. Competitor companies to where you are working now may have a different pay and management structure with more possibilities for promotion.
However, perhaps the best way to place yourself as an employee above minimum wages is to gain some sort of education. This may be through an apprenticeship or traineeship, going back to high school or university to complete a certificate or degree. What this option provides is the ability to cater your education to develop the exact skills your desired employers want in an employee.
If you are of a mature age and earning minimum wages, when choosing a field to learn about, it is also useful to choose practical fields, either through apprenticeships or university, to increase your earning potential.
Furthermore, by going back to a learning centre you will be able to use any lecturers and such as references for your resume while also being able to use any contacts they may have.
Overall, the current economic climate is proving financial hard for all employees, but by improving your own status those earning a minimum wage will be able to gain more for their work.
