Jobs Are About More Than Just Wages
Wednesday January 7, 2009
Wages should not be all you are concerned with when looking at listings of jobs. While it is certainly good to get paid well for your time, if the only thing keeping you around is whether the wages are the best you can get, then you could easily set yourself up for a terrible career.
Aside from wages, consider the kind of work involved in a particular job and the work environment it might offer. Jobs with higher wages may require more of your time and the employer may provide working conditions that you will find difficult to work under. If you can easily put up with such a situation in return for good wages, then that's your choice - it is unfortunately quite unlikely that you will tolerate poor conditions for long.
Some people look to wages as the only measure of whether a job is worth applying for due to financial commitments that they need to keep. It is possible to get the best of both worlds, though, as long as you spend the time and effort to look for the best opportunities. If you are looking for new jobs while currently working, then you should definitely take the time to find the best opportunities rather than just whatever you find first.
You may need to turn down job offers due to wages being too low, but also be prepared to do so when the wages are right but the conditions are terrible. Don't think you can't pass up the big money when you'd have to work a job you'd hate. Unhappy employees are bad for everyone, so if you can afford to, spend time finding the best job all-round rather than just the best paying job. Don't be afraid to make that effort.
