Understanding Minimum Wages and Australias Wages System

    Monday February 9, 2009

A majority of Australian jobs and wages are protected by federal or state awards that detail employers and employees right and obligations as well as the legally binding minimum wages rates.

Although, there are some employees that are working under a wages agreement there are some written contracts that may also set wages for employees not working under an award or agreement.

The Australian Fair Pay Commission has called for submissions from the public in regards to the wages decision. The Commission will consider the following criteria:

    • The capacity for the unemployed and low paid to obtain and remain in employment and wages
    • Employment and competitiveness across the economy
    • Providing a wages safety net for the low paid
    • Minimum wages for junior employees, employees to whom training arrangements apply and employees with disabilities that ensure those employees are competitive in the labour market.

The 2009 Minimum Wages Review will also include consideration of the impact of the Commission's previous Minimum Wages Decision, as announced in July 2008.
