Australian Wages System
Monday March 23, 2009
The Federal Government Minimum Wages Decision is approaching with the release date being July 2009, being part of the 2009 Minimum Wages Review. With possible changes to the system, it is important to understand exactly what is covered in Australia's wages system and minimum wages.
The main portion of Australian jobs and wages fall under federal or state awards which means that wages, rights and entitlements are protected, including set minimum wages. However, there are a number of employees who work under a wages agreement that sees employers set wages under written contract.
The Australian Fair Pay Commission is accepting submissions from the public on the upcoming wages decision. Considered in the Commission decision will be the unemployed capacity to obtain and remain in employment, the current employment and competitiveness in face of the economic crisis, how to provide a wages safety net for low paid employees and where to set the minimum wages for junior employees and disabled employees wages.
